The town is believed to be named in honour of an early settler, named Robert David Hamilton.
Abercorn State School opened on 3 May 1927.A post office opened in Abercornabout February 1928; it closed on 11 June 1986.In the 2016 census the locality of Abercorn had a population of 46 people.
