Description
The Arapuni Suspension Bridge is a popular tourist destination in the South Waikato District of New Zealand.
Built in the mid-1920s, the 152-meter suspension bridge spans the Arapuni gorge about 1.5 kilometers downstream from the Arapuni Dam. The bridge was constructed to allow workers from the village of Arapuni to access the power station construction site.
The bridge is surrounded by a rainforested gorge above the Waikato River, providing breathtaking views of the natural beauty of New Zealand. Visitors can cross the bridge and enjoy the stunning scenery from above. The site can be accessed via a walkway starting on Arapuni Road opposite Rabone Street. The walkway is a 0.3-mile out-and-back trail that takes an average of 11 minutes to complete.
Despite being a relatively simple ancillary structure, the Arapuni Suspension Bridge has become a popular tourist destination due to its historical significance and stunning views. Visitors to the site can enjoy a moderately challenging walk, stunning views of the Waikato River, and a glimpse into the history of New Zealand's largest civil engineering project. The site is easily accessible and well worth a visit for anyone traveling to the South Waikato District of New Zealand.
