Description
The Ararat Gallery was founded at a public meeting convened in March 1968 by the mayor of the city of Ararat, Councilor G.
Marx. At this meeting a small board and committee of six were elected. Ararat Shire Council made the old Ararat Council community offices available as a gallery. The Victorian Government provided an initial charter grant of $1,000, which the gallery received annually until 1974, when an increased grant of $5,700 was awarded. A second space, the Old Council Room, was made available in 1971, doubling the gallery's exhibition space.
