Aroona Dam Sanctuary

Aroona Dam Sanctuary is a private protected area located in South Australia, encompassing the localities of Leigh Creek and Puttapa.

It is situated within a kilometer of the town centre and most of the land in the locality of Leigh Creek is part of the sanctuary, including the Aroona Dam.

The sanctuary was previously used for grazing sheep by Myrtle Springs Station. It was declared a sanctuary under the Australian government in 1995 and a group of Yellow-footed rock-wallaby was released here in 1996 in collaboration with various organizations.

The sanctuary features a diverse landscape including the Aroona range, sandy desert, wetlands, hill slopes, and clay plains. Visitors can camp in designated areas, although facilities are limited. As of 2014, the sanctuary had not been categorized by the IUCN or included in the Australian National Reserve System. A caretaker lives in the sanctuary and NRG Flinders regularly visits the dam for water sampling.
