The Name Series of All Known Australian Prisoners of War The Australian ExPrisoners of War Memorial opened on Friday 6th February 2004.
It is located at the southern approaches to the Ballarat Botanic Gardens, on Wendouree Parade and adjacent to Lake Wendouree. Now nationally recognized as the Official National Prisoner of War Memorial, the memorial honors more than 35,000 Australians captured during the Boer War, WWI, WWII and the Korean War. It is a place of national honor, remembrance and healing for all Australians. The memorial takes visitors on a journey to another time and place where heroism, sacrifice and camaraderie were the defining characteristics of prisoners of war. the establishment of a contact point for commemoration was periodically discussed. During this period, the Australian federal government had made regular commitments to construct a permanent memorial in Canberra (the country's capital). In the early 1980s, Ballarat City Council granted land adjacent to the City Gardens to allow local veterans to establish a permanent POW shelter in Ballarat. By the mid-1990s, the Australian federal government still had no plans to build a permanent memorial in Canberra, so the surviving POWs in Ballarat jumped into action and began planning to found and build a permanent memorial in his town privately. with minimal government support.
