Description
Avon Park is a historical riverside park located in York, Western Australia.
The park's history dates back to 1841 when the land was among the first town allotments surveyed. In 1857, the York Agricultural Society was granted the right to use the land as a showground. Over the years, the Society requested additional land, but the York Municipal Council decided to establish Avon Park on the unused land to the north of Macartney Street in 1891. The park was officially opened in August of that year at a cost of £55. Vandalism and the establishment of public baths followed in the subsequent years. Eventually, the Municipality acquired additional land, and the State Government provided a grant for the showground lease. Today, Avon Park is a popular destination for fishing and has undergone recent upgrades to preserve its natural landscape and heritage.
