Description

Banyowla Regional Park, formerly known as Kelmscott-Martin Regional Park, is a conservation park located in the Perth Hills, Western Australia.

It was renamed in 2008 to honor Banyowla, a Noongar elder. The park is one of eleven regional parks in the Perth region and serves as an urban haven for preserving cultural heritage, ecosystems, and promoting sustainable nature-based recreation activities.

The concept of regional parks in Western Australia was first proposed in 1955, and the responsibility of managing these parks was assigned to the Department of Conservation and Land Management in 1989. Despite initial difficulties, a Regional Parks Taskforce was established in 1990. In 2008, the park, along with three others, was renamed using Aboriginal names. These four parks were originally part of the larger Darling Range Regional Park.

Banyowla Regional Park acknowledges the cultural significance of the Noongar people and their long-standing presence in the area. The park's name is linked to Banyowla, a victim of the 1834 Pinjarra massacre, and Captain Theophilus Tighe Ellis, who died during the massacre.

The park offers a variety of trails and walkways that provide scenic views of native woodlands and lush greenery. It is an ideal location for nature-based recreation activities such as bushwalking and picnicking. Amenities such as picnic facilities, barbeques, and toilets are available, but visitors are advised to bring their own drinking water.
