Description

Barham Federation Botanical Reserve is a natural haven for wildlife enthusiasts located just 1.6 kilometres from the town centre.

Managed by Barham Landcare, this 10-hectare reserve features both a lighter soil sand-hill and a heavier clay floodplain, allowing a range of local plant species to be represented from a variety of landscapes.

The reserve provides suitable habitat to over 125 species of plants endemic to the local region, as well as a range of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and birds. Over 130 bird species have been identified by local birdwatchers.

There are three walking tracks in the reserve that offer opportunities to explore the rich wildlife in the area. Interpretive signage about plants and animals found at the site is placed along the tracks, including information about how local indigenous ‘Barapa Barapa’ people used natural resources. The reserve also features excellent facilities, including a disabled toilet facility, and areas for barbecues and picnics.

The best time to visit the reserve is during the dry season from June to October when the weather is pleasant and the wildlife is most active. The reserve is easily accessible by car, with parking available on-site.
