Barmah National Park

Barmah National Park is a large area of outstanding natural beauty in the Hume region of Victoria, Australia.

It is known for its river red gum forest, which is the largest in the world and is subject to seasonal flooding. The park has a temperate semi-arid climate with temperatures ranging from 4°C in July to 30°C in January and February. Rainfall is moderate, with an average annual rainfall of 400 millimeters.

The park is home to a unique ecosystem consisting of a river red gum forest, a Eucalypt-box woodland, and a floodplain and wetland area. Threatened species of flora can be found in the park, including those listed under various conservation acts. These threats have resulted in a decrease in breeding occurrences of many species.

The park is managed by Parks Victoria and the Traditional Owners, including the Yorta Yorta people. Environmental flows are closely monitored to ensure the survival and regeneration of the river red gum forests and aquatic species. The management plan aims to restore the health of the ecosystems, control invasive plants, and eradicate introduced grazing animals.

Recently, Barmah National Park has been in the news due to the severe degradation caused by feral horses. Parks Victoria has announced a plan to cull more than 500 feral horses within the park over a four-year period. This is part of their efforts to remove all feral horses and address the environmental and animal welfare risks they pose newline.
