Description
Baroon Pocket Dam, located in South East Queensland, Australia, is a stunning rock and earth-fill embankment dam that serves the purpose of providing potable water supply.
The dam features an un-gated spillway and is located across the Obi Obi Creek in North Maleny. The impounded reservoir is known as Lake Baroon. The dam is a part of the Sunshine Coast region and has several features that make it an ideal location for multiple activities.
The name Baroon is an Aboriginal word for a meeting place and fighting ground. The name was first recorded by colonists in 1842.
The dam wall was completed in 1989 and is located 7 kilometers (4.3 miles) north of Maleny. The wall is an impressive 58 meters (190 feet) high and 370 meters (1,210 feet) long. When at full capacity, the dam holds back an astonishing 61,000 megaliters (13×10^9 imp gal; 16×10^9 US gal) of water. The surface area of the reservoir covers 380 hectares (940 acres) while the catchment area has a radius of 72 square kilometers (28 square miles). The uncontrolled, un-gated spillway of the dam has a discharge capacity of 1,013 cubic meters per second (35,800 cu ft/s).
The primary use of Baroon Pocket Dam is for town water supply for Maroochy and Caloundra. An intake tower allows water to flow from the dam through a 2.5-meter (8.2 feet) wide, 2.5-kilometer (1.6 miles) long tunnel under the Blackall Range. Water is then
