Description
Take a trip to Sydney's most northern point – Barrenjoey Head at Palm Beach – and experience the iconic Barrenjoey Lighthouse.
Built from sandstone quarried on site in 1881, the lighthouse, its oil room and keepers’ cottages remain unpainted in their original stone finish and offer outstanding views from 91m above sea level.
Reaching the lighthouse is easy and can be done in two ways. Take the 1km Barrenjoey track for an easy and picturesque walk, or the shorter, steeper Smugglers track, which was built by customs officers to monitor smugglers bringing contraband into Broken Bay around 1850. The walk to the top will take approximately 30 minutes each way from Governor Phillip parking area.
Once you reach the top, be sure to bring your binoculars for whale watching between the months of May and September, or capture the panoramic views of Broken Bay, Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park and the Central Coast with your camera. You can also take a virtual tour of the lighthouse with Google Street View Trekker.
For directions, safety and practical information, see visitor info. A trip to the Barrenjoey Lighthouse is the perfect way to show off Sydney's northern beaches to overseas visitors – they may even recognise the lighthouse from Home and Away and Summer Bay Surf Club nearby.
