Bathurst Begonia House and Fernery

The Bathurst Begonia House and Fernery is a popular attraction situated on the eastern side of Machattie Park.

It features a stunning display of over 90 hybrid species of begonia that blooms from late February to April, as well as a sub-tropical fernery with plants that would otherwise not survive in the dry Bathurst climate.

Visitors can expect to be delighted with the vibrant colors and beauty of the Begonia House in full bloom. The house is home to a wide range of begonias, including upright standing flowers, pendulous and foliage begonias. A walk around the Bathurst Fernery is also a must-see, where visitors can view a variety of subtropical ferns and other plants. The fernery was built in 1890 and has remained relatively unchanged on the outside, while the interior has undergone several transformations. The front entrance of the fernery features a plaque commemorating Charles Darwin's visit to Bathurst in 1836, and the interior is adorned with several marble statues that were loaned by the National Art Gallery in Sydney in 1901.

Visitors should plan to visit during the autumn months, from late February to the end of April, to witness the iconic Begonia House in full bloom. The Bathurst Begonia House and Fernery is located on the eastern side of Machattie Park, in the heart of Bathurst. The park is just a short walk from the center of town, and there is plenty of parking available nearby. Visitors can also take a bus to Bathurst and walk from the bus station to the park, which takes about 10 minutes.
