Description

The South Burnett in Kingaroy is a birdwatcher's paradise with over 350 bird species recorded.

The region offers diverse habitats including dry rainforest, hoop pine forests, water masses, open woodlands, and vine scrub.

While birdwatching in the South Burnett, visitors can expect to see species such as the Black-breasted Button-quail, Glossy Black-Cockatoo, Red-rumped Parrot, Regent Bowerbird, Rainbow Bee-eater, Dollarbird, and Spiny-cheeked Honeyeater. There are several local hot spots to explore, including Lake Barambah, Nanango Fauna Sanctuary, Mudlo Conservation Park Kilkivan, Wooroolin Wetlands, Gordonbrook Dam, Boat Mountain Regional Park, and Bunya Mountains National Park. Birdwatchers can find great vantage points such as viewing platforms, lookouts, and walking tracks, but birds can be spotted anywhere, including quiet country roads, parks, and urban areas.

The South Burnett is an excellent destination for birdwatching year-round, but the best time to spot birds is from August to November when the weather is warmer.

To get to the South Burnett, it is a two and a half hour drive from Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, and Fraser Coast. The region is surrounded by the pine-clad Bunya Mountains to the southwest, the hoop-pine covered Blackbutt Range to the east, and the historic Burnett Range to the north. When visiting for birdwatching, it is recommended to pack walking shoes, a picnic, hat, bird book, and binoculars to fully enjoy and record sightings in the South Burnett.
