Biriwal Bulga National Park

Biriwal Bulga National Park, located in New South Wales, is a 5,813-hectare park situated approximately 45km northwest of Taree and 60km west of Port Macquarie on the Bulga Plateau.

The park is culturally significant to the Indigenous Birpai people, who have lived in the area for over 15,000 years.

The park is named after the Indigenous Birpai people and has evidence of Indigenous Australian habitation for thousands of years. European exploration of the surrounding areas began in the 1800s, and the park was officially discovered in 1982. Originally harvested for timber, pine harvesting was discontinued in 1990 due to conservation concerns. Today, the park is a conservation national park protected under various management plans.

Biriwal Bulga National Park ranges in elevation from 130m to 670m and consists of dissected foothills. The soil depth varies depending on the slope, and the most common rocks are mudstone and shale. The park receives an annual rainfall of 1300-1600mm, influencing the types of native plants found there. Due to its remote location, the park has few visitors and lacks facilities or walking trails. The nearest recreational facilities are at Tapin Tops National Park and Ellenborough Falls at Elands.

The park is home to various species of flora and fauna. The soil depth and range of elevation contribute to the biodiversity of the area. Koalas are considered a conservation priority in the park, and the terrain and environment support their steady population growth.

Pest control and bushfires are significant environmental threats within the park. Strategies to control pests have been implemented, and back-burning is used to manage bushfire risks.
