The café is owned and operated by Sylvie Boutelje-Chasteau and Dion Milanesi, who came from Auckland for work, fell in love with the city, and decided to establish a coffee and food spot that the locals would enjoy.

It is owned by experienced coffee professionals who serve up a range of coffee styles, like espresso, pour-over, and cold brew, to cater to everyone's preferences. Their baristas use locally roasted beans to prepare the coffee, adding a unique flavor profile that customers appreciate.
For food, the café has a selection of homemade dishes that are made fresh daily. They have a brunch menu that offers tasty choices such as eggs benedict, French toast, house granola, and bacon & egg pie. They also have lunch items like pies, salads, and burgers that you can pair with their hot or iced coffee.

Black Shag Boutique Café is open seven days a week from early morning till mid-afternoon, so you can drop by any day of the week to enjoy some coffee and food. Avoid the rush hour from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM, and from 12:00 PM to 1:30 PM, so that you can get a table easily. On weekends, the café is more crowded, so it's advised to come early or later in the afternoon.
