Blackbutt Reserve

Blackbutt Reserve is a nature reserve located between New Lambton and Kotara in the Newcastle region of New South Wales, Australia.

It spans 182 hectares and is surrounded by the urban area of Newcastle. The reserve is conveniently situated between two suburbs, accessible via Lookout Road in the north and Carnley Avenue in the south. Despite being bordered by dense urbanization, it provides a tranquil oasis for visitors.

The land of Blackbutt Reserve was once a coal mine operated by the Scottish-Australian Mining Company. In 1938, the NSW government resumed the land to establish the first official portion of the reserve. Over the years, various proposals for development were suggested, including a highway, zoo, botanical garden, and private school. Richley Reserve, located on Carnley Avenue, is the recreation area of Blackbutt Reserve. It covers 182 hectares and offers picnic spots and barbecue facilities for visitors. The area was named after Joe Richley, who played a significant role in preserving the reserve. During the construction of the new amenities building in 2014, an old brick-lined mine shaft from the 19th century was discovered, adding to the reserve's unique history and heritage.
