Description

Blanket Bay is a picturesque and secluded bay located on the rugged coastline of Victoria, Australia.

It is a part of the Cape Otway National Park and features a beautiful sandy beach that is approximately 200 metres long. The bay is protected by rock platforms and outer reefs, and is surrounded by steep, sloping Manna Gum forests and rugged rock and reef coastline. A charming creek flows into the beach, adding to the beauty of the location. Visitors can also explore the area through hiking trails of the Great Ocean Walk. Camping is available in the area adjacent to the bay.

The history of Blanket Bay is a blend of indigenous, military, and maritime history. It was once an unloading point for supplies arriving by ship to supply the Cape Otway lighthouse. In 1877, a road gang was landed at the bay to construct a track to the lighthouse. Tragically, three mariners lost their lives in rough surf when their boat capsized while coming ashore at Blanket Bay in 1896. In 1846, a number of Gadubanud aboriginal people were massacred in a revenge expedition. These events have left an indelible mark on the history of Blanket Bay and should be remembered and honored.

Blanket Bay is a must-visit location for visitors to Victoria. Its stunning scenery, peaceful environment, and fascinating history make it an excellent destination for camping, hiking, or simply relaxing on its beautiful sandy beach.
