Description

Located in the Southern Highlands region, Box Vale Walking Track And Picnic Area Woodlands is a picturesque trail that follows the historic railway line.

The trail is 4.4 kilometers long and runs through cuttings, embankments, and a tunnel which is 84 meters in length. This historic trail provides a unique walking experience with a glimpse of the past.

The trail has easy grades despite the stony and rocky surrounding terrain. The return walk takes approximately three hours. At the beginning of the trail, there is a 1.8-kilometer spur leading to Forty Foot Falls. This section of the fire trail is of easy grade and takes about one hour for a round trip. Forty Foot Falls is a beautiful waterfall in pleasant bushland, but one cannot see the falls from the end of the fire trail. To get to the vantage point below the falls, a steep track dropping 110 meters in elevation is required. This section can be difficult for those not accustomed to negotiating such steep tracks but is worth the effort for those who can take it on. The return walk along the entire 1.8-kilometer spur track takes about two hours.

At the beginning of the track car park, there are picnic tables to enjoy a break before or after the trail. Box Vale Walking Track And Picnic Area Woodlands is open year-round. Spring and fall are great seasons to enjoy the amazing views of the lush nature trail.

The track is located about 250 meters off the Hume Highway. The turn-off is located 3.7 kilometers west of Mittagong and 0.8 kilometers east of the Wombeyan Caves Road. Maps are available from the Southern Highlands Welcome Centre, Mittagong.
