Boyagin Rock

Boyagin Rock Nature Reserve is a cultural and natural wonder located in the Wheatbelt region of Western Australia.

Rising 50 m above the surrounding land, it is the crestal area of a granite inselberg within the Yilgarn Craton framework. Situated just southwest of Brookton and northwest of Pingelly, it is approximately 175 km southeast of Perth. The Boyagin Nature Reserve, established in 1978, covers an area of 1.21 km2.

The reserve is known for its intact original fauna and flora, making it a significant area in the Avon Wheatbelt bioregion. Visitors can observe a variety of fauna, including numbats, goannas, echidnas, and Tammar wallabies. The flora consists of eucalypt woodland and heathland, with banksias, grevilleas, hakeas, triggerplants, and wattles being prominent. It is an ideal location for experiencing the local fauna and flora in their natural habitat.

Boyagin Rock holds great cultural and spiritual significance for the Noongar people, known as "Boogin" to them. According to the Balardong Noongar, it is a site of deep cultural meaning. Traditional stories explain how the rock was formed, with the belief that it is the last resting place of the Wagyl, a creation spirit in the form of a gigantic water snake. Elder Cliff Humphries spoke of the Wagyl's travels, including Boyagin Rock, during the time of creation. Calling out the name of the Wagyl at this location is believed to bring rain.
