Description
Take a walk in the footsteps of the Bpangerang people, who have lived in North East Victoria for thousands of years, and discover the local native plants, trees, shrubs, grasses, and herbs found in the Bullawah Cultural Trail Wangaratta.
Learn fascinating facts about how plants were used for food, fiber, and medicine, and how the Aboriginal people understood 'Country' and managed it sustainably. The Bush Tucker Garden, which is approximately 1.8 kilometers from the trail's start, offers a unique insight into the Aboriginal culture's food and plant use.
The Bush Tucker Garden features a winding path and circular nodes that resemble the rivers natural bends and deep water holes created by the Carraragarmungee (big fish). You will be amazed by how beautifully the garden was inspired by nature. You will learn about the Aboriginal food habits of the Bpangerang people. They relied heavily on plant-based foods, and only occasionally hunted for meat. Plants were consumed raw, so they were always in their freshest form. The Aboriginal people understood the seasons, inter-connectivity of the native plants, and the relationship between plants and animals. They successfully managed the land by caring for it, keeping it healthy and sustainable.
The Trail is open throughout the year. Winter months see occasional flooding, making the Bush Tucker Garden inaccessible during that time.
The Bush Tucker Garden is situated 1.8 kilometers from the start of the Bullawah Cultural Trail in Apex Park Wangaratta, where parking is available for visitors.
