Butterfield Reserve

The Butterfield Reserve Emerald is a large protected forest area located near Woori Yallock Creek on Emerald – Monbulk Road, in the Dandenong Ranges.

It was once a logging and gold mining region but is now conserved to preserve the native flora and fauna. The reserve is an important part of the wildlife corridor in the Dandenong Ranges and is home to various native species, including the endangered Leadbeater possum and helmeted honeyeater.

The reserve offers a peaceful retreat in the Australian bushland and is suitable for families, nature enthusiasts, and those who appreciate the region's natural beauty. Visitors can explore the native flora and fauna, go for walks, and have picnics or BBQs in the beautiful natural setting. The Wildlife Reserve Walk, a 3km return walk, allows visitors to see the chimney remnants of Bill Butterfield's cottage, built in the early 1940s. Many of the walking tracks in this area follow the original trails constructed in the 1850s.

The Butterfield Reserve Emerald provides several amenities for visitors, including picnic sites with BBQ facilities and washrooms. Parking is available on Old Monbulk Road or Butterfield Road. Horse riding and walking trails are also available, though they are unpaved.

The reserve can be visited at any time of year, but many people prefer to go during the warmer months when picnics and BBQs are more comfortable. To get to the reserve, take the Emerald-Monbulk Road in the Dandenong Ranges. The entrance is opposite the Emerald Diggings Picnic Ground, and there is ample parking on Old Monbulk Road or Butterfield Road.
