Cape Peron - Rockingham Lakes

Cape Peron has rugged limestone cliffs with sandy beaches and offshore reefs, while its northern shore is more sheltered. It is popular for sightseeing, fishing, walking, diving, swimming and picnicking.

Enjoy the coastal beauty of Cape Peron on a walk along its shores or take the plunge to explore some of the underwater features of the Shoalwater Islands Marine Park. The waters surrounding Cape Peron are dotted with numerous reefs, caves and swimthroughs.

Snorkelling from shore
Point Peron and Mushroom Rocks are interesting snorkelling sites. The limestone has been carved into numerous overhangs, small caves and swimthroughs very close to shore in up to five metres.The north and south ends of the beach at Long Reach are gently sloping and sandy, allowing easy entry. In the centre is a flat beach rock platform that drops to about 1.5 metres. An alternative entry site is the beach just west of the Department of Education and Training camp school. This entry provides good access to the Point John Reef.

Immerse yourself
The reefs about 150 metres from the north and south end of Long Reach beach lie in water up to seven metres deep and are best suited to scuba diving. Here, the swimthroughs are bigger and the caves deeper. Old wives, various wrasse and red-lipped morwong are relatively common.
