CARCAÇA

Events Feb 7 - 9 State Theatre Centre of WA

174 / 176 William St, Perth, WA 6000

Description

Ten performers electrify the stage, taking street dance, hip-hop battles and club culture as its base, while reclaiming traditional European folk dances with an explosion of energy.

Colour, rhythm and rebellion explode onstage as folklore meets urban culture in CARCAÇA. In this rapturous confrontation where tradition and contemporary collide Portuguese choreographer Marco da Silva Ferreira asks what do we want to preserve, what do we want to transform and what do we want to forget. The dancing starts with jumping footwork familiar from street dance, clubbing and hip-hop battles, and builds, accelerating into into wild, euphoric movement that connects with the legacy and memory of dances from the past.

These traditional steps, frozen in time, resistant to change and disregarding the influence of new perspectives or minority communities, are transformed in a vibrant and rebellious exploration of identity and equality. The darling of the European dance scene, Marco da Silva Ferreira blends diverse dance styles to explore communal identity, memory and our relationship with the past.

CARCAÇA is bright, it’s bold and it’ll blow your mind.
