Description
Cattai National Park is a protected area in the Hawkesbury region of Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. It covers a large 424-hectare (1,050-acre) area and is located about 55 kilometers (34 mi) northwest of Sydney's central business district.
The park consists of three areas along the Hawkesbury River: Cattai Park, Hope Farm, and Mitchell Park.
The park holds cultural significance as it is situated on lands that were part of the original First Fleet grant. Visitors can explore important historic and archaeological resources, including a homestead built in the 1820s. The park also features ruins of a stone windmill, believed to be the oldest industrial building in Australia, and other features that reflect changes since the 19th century. Convict-built dry stone walls can also be found.
Cattai National Park is home to several Aboriginal sites that provide insight into the area's indigenous heritage and culture before European settlement.
Notable attractions within the park include the Cattai Homestead, constructed around 1820 and listed by the National Trust and the Australian Heritage Commission. The Hope Farm Mill, located on Hope Farm, is another must-see site. It is listed on the Register of the National Estate and is believed to be the oldest industrial site in Australia, dating back to around 1806.
Cattai National Park is an important site of national heritage and a must-visit destination for history enthusiasts.
