Charlotte Pass Snow Resort is a unique and historic snow resort and village located in the Snowy Mountains of New South Wales, Australia.
It is situated in the Kosciuszko National Park, making it one of Australia's oldest snow resorts in an environmentally sensitive zone. The pass is also the closest village to Mount Kosciuszko, the tallest mountain in Australia.
The Snowy Mountains region has a rich history of Aboriginal occupation dating back thousands of years. Charlotte Pass is named after Charlotte Adams, the first European woman to climb Mount Kosciuszko in 1881. The Kosciuszko National Park, where Charlotte Pass is located, was established in 1944 and became the Kosciuszko National Park in 1997. The historic Kosciuszko Chalet, which opened in 1930, is the largest and most significant building in the village.
Charlotte Pass is known for its unique climate, with subpolar oceanic and subantarctic climates, and the higher peaks experiencing a Tundra climate. It is the coldest location in Australia, with winter temperatures regularly dropping below -10 °C (14 °F). The area receives an average of 55.7 snowy days annually and has an average annual rainfall of 2329.6 mm. Snowfalls can occur unexpectedly throughout the year.
The area is home to endangered species such as the mountain pygmy possum and the threatened broad-toothed mouse. Other animals that can be seen in the area include eastern grey kangaroos, wombats, platypus, crows, magpies, crimson rosellas, and flame robins. The area has also been used for environmental research.
