Description
Cocklebiddy Cave is a notable cave located in Cocklebiddy, Western Australia.
It is the longest single tunnel cave in Australia, measuring over 6 kilometers long. The cave is accessible through a 10-kilometer unsealed and bumpy dirt and rock track, so visitors should be confident in driving through this type of terrain. The entrance chamber of the cave is over 300 meters long and leads to a 180-meter-long lake. The cave then consists of a single, straight tunnel more than six kilometers long.
Cocklebiddy Cave is more known for extreme cave diving, as around 90% of the cave is underwater and only accessible via cave diving. In August 1983, a French team set a world record for the longest cave dive in the world at Cocklebiddy Cave. In October of that year, the French record was beaten by an Australian team when Hugh Morrison of Western Australia pushed another 280 meters beyond where the French had tied off.
Facilities and amenities in the area include a roadhouse with accommodation, a caravan park, a restaurant, and a service station serving the needs of travelers. Visitors should plan accordingly and bring their own supplies and equipment for exploring the cave.
