Condamine River

The Condamine River in Southern Queensland, Australia is part of the Balonne catchment and the Murray-Darling Basin.

It stretches approximately 500 kilometers and starts from Mount Superbus on the western slopes of the Great Dividing Range. The river plays a vital role as one of the major tributaries of the Darling River.

The Condamine River is known for its scenic route through Cambanoora Gorge and the towns of Killarney, Warwick, and Chinchilla. It is also home to Gowrie Creek, a tributary that drains the slopes around Toowoomba. The river descends 516 meters over its 657-kilometer course and has a catchment area of 13,292 square kilometers. The water basin contains over 1,800 wetlands.

The Balonne River, a branch of the Condamine River, forks near Dirranbandi. The western branch is called the Culgoa River, while the eastern branch branches again into the Bokhara River and the Narran River. The Condamine River is home to towns such as St. George, Dirranbandi, and Surat.

The Condamine River's catchment area was inhabited by the Bundjalung people before European settlers arrived. It was named by Allan Cunningham in 1827 after Thomas de la Condamine, the colony's first Collector of Internal Revenue. Major Thomas Mitchell and Ludwig Leichhardt explored the river in the mid-1800s.
