Description

Philippa (Pip) Gordon works from her home studio in Wembley Downs, Perth, Western Australia. Pip has been making, selling and exhibiting ceramics since 1997.

This Spring Art meets Fashion with floral impressed ceramics in vibrant indigo blue (ai-iro in Japanese).  Inspired by Japanese Indigo Dyeing (ai-zome), one of the oldest natural dying methods in the world. It's the blue that made blue jeans so popular the world over.

Japan have masters of Indigo dyeing standing by traditional production methods, using all natural ingredients, delighting in it's long and complicated process.

The fermenting vats of indigo are said to be 'alive', requiring tending to, with batches varying in the colours they produce throughout a day.  A good batch produces a sponge like foam on the surface called Indigo Flowers (ai-no-hana).
