Description

The Coola Outstation Historical Walk in Millicent is a 3.6km trail that offers a glimpse into the history of early European settlement in the region.

The outstation was once part of the Benara sheep station and was occupied by stockmen and their families until the mid-1950s. Along the trail, visitors will find interpretive signage and old farm machinery that help bring the story of Coola Station to life.

One of the highlights of the trail is the Coola Lookout, which provides stunning views of the surrounding landscape, including the lake, dunes, and farmland. Another interesting feature is the 'singing forest,' an area of dryland tea-tree that makes a noise on breezy days. Picnic facilities are available at the singing forest, making it a great spot to stop and enjoy some lunch.

The trail also passes by the remains of a boat and crosses Beggs Swamp before reaching Sandy Bar on the banks of Lake Bonney. This wetland area is home to a variety of wetland birds, such as terns, ducks, and herons. The Coola Outstation Historical Walk is a sheltered trail, making it an ideal destination to visit during winter, spring, or when the coast is cold and windy. The trail is open year-round, allowing visitors to explore at their convenience.

To reach the Coola Outstation Historical Walk, take the Riddoch Highway from Mount Gambier or Kingston SE. The trailhead is located off Coola Road, approximately a 10-minute drive from Millicent.
