Description
Corin Dam is a significant water supply for Canberra, located in the Namadgi National Park.
It was built in 1968 as a regulating supply for Bendora Dam and was upgraded in 2016. The upper Cotter River catchment ensures a constant flow of high-quality water into Corin Dam. The stored water is released into the Cotter River and flows downstream to Bendora Dam, where it is transferred to Mount Stromlo Water Treatment Plant.
Corin Dam is an earth and rockfill embankment dam with an uncontrolled side-channel spillway across the Cotter River. It stands at a height of 74 meters and is 282 meters long, with a volume of 1,394 thousand cubic meters. The dam holds 75,500 megalitres of water, covering an area of approximately 3.15 square kilometers. Its catchment area is 197 square kilometers. The uncontrolled side channel spillway can discharge 1,190 cubic meters per second of water from the reservoir, with a high water level of around 955.54 meters above sea level.
Fishing, swimming, and boating are prohibited at Corin Dam to protect the water's purity, as it is a vital source of potable water for Canberra and the surrounding area. The dam is accessible year-round, and visitors can enjoy hiking in the Namadgi National Park. To reach Corin Dam, visitors can drive via Corin Road, which is about a 50-minute drive from Canberra city center newline.
