Description
Cranky Rock Nature Reserve is a unique destination located in Warialda, east of New South Wales, Australia.
The reserve is accessible by car, and its turn-off is 5km to the east of Warialda off the Gwydir Highway. From there, you can drive along a 3km sealed road that will take you all the way to Cranky Rock.
At Cranky Rock, visitors will see giant, oddly-positioned boulders, which are the result of past volcanic upheaval. A suspension bridge, birdlife and wildlife sanctuary, and a viewing platform are some of the attraction features. The recreational facilities at this location include picnic areas, a large shelter with free barbecues, public toilets, and a children's playground.
You can also enjoy a variety of outdoor activities at Cranky Rock Nature Reserve. Established walking trails are available, catering to both easy strolls or more challenging hikes. Visitors can also go fossicking along the creek, and various signs of Aboriginal life are visible within the nature reserve, among the many plant life.
The story of Warialda's Cranky Rock and the Chinaman has intrigued locals for generations. According to legend, a 'cranky' Chinese man was accused of murdering a Warialda woman. He was eventually chased by the police and evaded capture by jumping to his death from the top of the balancing rocks. Some people believe that the Chinese man is the one who gave the name Cranky Rock to the site.
Cranky Rock Nature Reserve is open all year round.
