Description

Currawinya National Park is a natural oasis located in South West Queensland, Australia.

It covers an area of around 155,000 hectares and is part of the Mulga Lands bioregion. The park is named after the Aboriginal word Koorawatha, meaning "place of the winds," and encompasses the Paroo River.

The park has a rich history, with Indigenous Australians using the area for many years. It was later used as pastoral land before being purchased by the Queensland government in 1991 to create the national park. In 2015, the park doubled in size after acquiring three adjoining properties.

Currawinya National Park is home to two Ramsar-listed wetland sites, Lakes Numalla and Wyara. These lakes are important habitats for waterbirds, especially during droughts, and support migrating waders. The park is also home to 14 threatened species and over 200 bird species.

One of the park's notable features is a 25 km2 bilby enclosure surrounded by a predator-exclusion fence. This enclosure provides a safe area for captive-bred and rehabilitated bilbies. Efforts to cull the cats have been challenging, leading to delays in releasing newly reared bilbies into the enclosure.

Currawinya National Park offers various recreational activities such as fishing, canoeing, and swimming in freshwater lakes newline.
