Simple yet intriguing, this family home is designed with meticulous detail to create an impressive appearance while complementing an active lifestyle.
An energetic family with a love of the outdoors was to be catered for in this home created by D4 Designs. Viewing the children from any room on the ground floor was of utmost importance to the clients, particularly as they requested an outdoor swimming pool. The block they chose had the potential for valley and ocean views from the rear upper level, while the front entry was via a busy street and required some techniques to ensure privacy. The block was also north-south orientated which created the challenge of maximising the northern sun in living areas while providing shelter from the notorious Fremantle Doctor.
Despite some interesting challenges, D4 Designs fashioned an open-plan home that captures natural light and has unique street appeal.
The kitchen is the hub of this home, centrally located on the ground floor adjoining an alfresco area. Acting as a central node, both the kitchen and alfresco area are surrounded by glass, allowing visibility to and from any room while creating the illusion of more space.
Being the star of the show comes with some responsibility, therefore the kitchen had to be a feature point while remaining functional and minimalist. A feature exhaust canopy floats over the stainless steel, carved hotplate and sink contrasting with stark white solid surface benchtops and white gloss lacquered doors.
The central alfresco courtyard allows light to penetrate the rear of the house and is protected from the south-westerly winds.
Bikes, kayaks and a small boat were to be housed in addition to the standard two cars, therefore the double garage was increased to incorporate a storage area and a reversing bay. An outdoor shower was also included to provide a quick washdown after a day at the nearby beach or river.
Breakfast in bed will never be the same for the owners, as the master bedroomon the upper level has a glorious outlook to the Indian Ocean. The ensuite bathroom and a connecting balcony also provide magnificent views of the rear garden and swimming pool,and the ocean.
Also on the upper floor are the two children’s bedrooms, a guest room and a bathroom that branch off a simple but light and open passage.
The husband and wife both run their businesses from home, therefore a large, two-person study with close access to the entry was integrated into the home’s design. Double glass entry doors to the study allow privacy while keeping to the home’s open theme.
