Diamantina National Park

Diamantina National Park, located in the Channel Country of South West Queensland, Australia, is a 507,000 ha (1,250,000 acres) land of natural diversity, unique flora and fauna, and rich cultural history.

The park is named after Lady Diamantina Bowen and the Diamantina River that flows through it. It is situated approximately 1,278 km (794 mi) west of Brisbane and has an average elevation of 139 meters.

In 1992, the Queensland Government purchased Diamantina Lakes Station, and the park was gazetted the following year as a national park. Diamantina National Park won an award in March 2007 from the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) for being among the top 10 reserves of the decade. The park has successfully protected the bilby, an endangered mammal native to Australia. In 1998, the cattle were removed from the park, encouraging the restoration of the grasslands.

The Diamantina and Astrebla Grasslands Important Bird Area, in conjunction with the Astrebla Downs National Park, covers a total of 7,627 km2 (2,945 sq mi). BirdLife International identified this area as one of the few sites known for the critically endangered night parrot. It also supports globally important populations of various bird species. In 2016, a population of the critically endangered night parrot was discovered in the park, significantly expanding the known range and becoming the largest known population of the species.

Parts of the Diamantina National Park contain traditional Aboriginal lands, known for their food resources and numerous habitation sites. Aboriginals would seasonal roam the area, moving from the sandh
