Dianne Jones - The Beach

Presented by the Perth Festival, artist Dianne Jones presents artistry creations reflecting on Australian narratives.

Dianne Jones made the photographic series Australian Photographs more than twenty years ago, using analogue processes to re-photograph and insert herself into Australian narratives. Her seminal works Sunbaker and Beach Scene rework iconic Australian beach photographs by artist Max Dupain. Smiling and waving at the camera, Jones’ presence on the beach queered these sites and placed contemporary Indigenous identities into Australian narratives and art history.

Alongside these works, Dianne will present a new large-scale photographic work responsive to Manjaree (Bathers Beach) in Walyalup / Fremantle and its spiritual importance as a site of kinship and meeting in Noongar culture. The Beach describes the familial and cultural connections and addresses first contact in Walyalup.
