Description
Dooragan National Park is a picturesque getaway for nature lovers located on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales, Australia, near Laurieton.
The park is approximately 365 kilometres (227 mi) northeast of Sydney.
The park gets its name from Dooragan, the youngest of three Birpai tribe brothers who were reportedly killed by the witch Widjirriejuggi and buried where the majestic Three Brothers mountains stand today. These mountains, also named by Captain James Cook in 1770, offer a wide range of vegetation communities.
In the Dooragan National Park, nature lovers will find a diverse range of bird species, including currawongs, kookaburras, and magpies. The park also supports various vegetation communities, providing habitat for gliders, bats, and koalas.
Access to the park was improved in 1970 with the construction of a road to the summit, which is now sealed. Viewing platforms with wheelchair access offer beautiful views of the coast. Picnic, barbecue, and toilet facilities are available, along with walks of varying lengths and difficulties.
While the park is beautiful, lantana, a noxious weed, is a growing problem in the area. Visitors are urged to respect the park's beauty and avoid littering.
