Description
Double Island Point is a beautiful coastal headland located in the Cooloola section of the Great Sandy National Park in Queensland, Australia.
It is situated at the southern end of Wide Bay and is only 12 kilometers south of Rainbow Beach.
The area holds cultural significance as it has been inhabited by the Kabi Kabi people for thousands of years. Double Island Point was even used as a burial site by the indigenous people. The point was named by Captain Cook in 1770, although he initially referred to it as Fiddle Head before changing the name.
Despite its name, Double Island Point does not have double islands but instead features a sandspit. It is the southern point of Wide Bay and is home to Wolf Rock, a set of four volcanic pinnacles off the coast. Access to the point is limited to four-wheel drive vehicles traveling along the beach from Rainbow Beach or Noosa Heads.
The area has several heritage-listed sites, including the iconic Double Island Point Light. The lighthouse, constructed in 1884, holds historical and architectural value. It was initially built halfway up the point but was later moved to the top for better visibility. The lighthouse has undergone various changes, including the switch from oil to vaporized kerosene and then to electric power. It became automated and converted to solar power in 1992. The light characteristic is a single flash every 7.5 seconds, and it is situated at an elevation of 96 meters above sea level.
