Description
Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary is a beautiful wetland located in Bayswater, Western Australia.
It serves as a home to a wide variety of wildlife, particularly bird species. The wetlands were named after Eric Singleton, a local advocate for the wetlands who helped save them from development in the 1970s.
The site of the sanctuary was transformed into a wetland in the 1980s after the dumping of waste in the surrounding areas. In 2015, a restoration project was undertaken to improve water quality and attract more wildlife. The project received several awards for its success.
The rehabilitation project focused on ensuring clean water discharge into the Swan River. The water flows through a gross pollutant trap to remove rubbish and sediment before passing through alternating areas of shallow and deep water to remove nutrients. The process takes 48 hours from entry to exit. The wetlands were also planted with native plants during the project.
The sanctuary is a haven for birdwatchers, with over 104 bird species recorded. Species such as Musk Duck, Pink-eared duck, Blue-billed duck, Grey teal, Hoary-headed grebe, and black-fronted dotterel can be found there.
In 2016, a housing development next to the wetlands caused controversy. In 2018, the sanctuary was rezoned to ensure protection from development.
In conclusion, Eric Singleton Bird Sanctuary offers a peaceful and refreshing recreational experience for birders and nature lovers alike. It is a place
