Description
Fernleigh Track is a 15.5 km (10 mi) rail trail in New South Wales, Australia.
It was created by repurposing the abandoned Belmont railway line and is open to walkers, joggers, cyclists, and horse riders. The trail passes through historic railway tunnels and over beautiful bridges, offering visitors a chance to explore the region's top attractions.
The rail trail follows the route of the former Belmont railway line, which opened in 1880 and was extended to Belmont in 1916. The line had multiple stations, including Kahibah Station, which was used as a crossing point for the Great North Walk. After its closure in 1991, work began to transform the track into a multi-use trail.
One of the unique features of the Fernleigh Track is its preservation of heritage sites from the original railway. The Fernleigh Tunnel, which runs beneath the Pacific Highway, is a brick-lined highlight of the trail. The track also passes through the Glenrock Lagoon catchment area, providing a natural haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Along the way, visitors can explore the engineering and historical landmarks associated with the railway line.
Construction of the Fernleigh Track began in 2003, with the first section opening between Adamstown and Burwood Road. The final section between Jewells and Belmont was completed in March 2011. Throughout the trail, visitors can learn about the history of the railway line and its stations.
Whether exploring on foot, bike, or horseback, the Fernleigh Track offers a beautiful trail that showcases the region's history and natural beauty. It is open year-round and makes for a great day trip for those seeking an outdoor adventure.
