Description
Five Islands Walking Track Saltwater is a must-do experience for those who want to immerse themselves in the natural beauty of the coastal landscape.
This easy walk starts from the Saltwater picnic area and takes you through coastal heath and paperbark swamp. The Saltwater National Park has a rich Aboriginal heritage, and the Five Islands Walking Track provides glimpses into their past through scarred trees, middens and fish traps. This walk is not only a scenic journey but also a cultural experience.
The Saltwater Gully, which is part of a system of waterways, offers a unique opportunity to experience diverse ecosystems. During the walk, you'll get to see rainforest, mangroves, salt flats, sedge and wetlands. The highlight of the journey is the Khappinghat Creek, where you can see the Five Islands. Upon crossing the Saltwater Gully, the walk takes you into the Khappinghat Nature Reserve, the largest area of undeveloped wetlands on the Mid North Coast of NSW. The reserve is home to a range of bird species and wildlife.
The weather is cooler, and the trail is less muddy and more enjoyable. Saltwater National Park is situated between Taree and Forster, off the Lakes Way in New South Wales. The walking track can be reached via the Saltwater picnic area. The park has a large parking area, and the walking track starts from there. So, pack your bags, put on your hiking boots and embark on an adventure to remember.
