Description
Taste stunning cool climate wines and renowned award-winning rieslings at the beautiful Frankland River estate, with cellar door open Monday to Friday and weekends by appointment.
Established in 1988 by Barrie Smith and Judi Cullam and located at the northern end of the Frankland River roughly 250kms east of Margaret River, Frankland Estate produces upwards of 15,000 cases each year. The estate remains family owned and is largely run by Barrie and Judi's children Hunter and Elizabeth Smith.
35 acres of vineyards include many parcels nestled in areas of bushland surrounded by native plants and natural land formations which make the Frankland River viticultural region so beautiful. The soils are gravelly ironstone and contribute minerality to the wines.
The Wines:
The wines focus on site expression and terroir and the winery is best known for its award winning rieslings. The Smith's have been hosting an important annual riesling masterclass for more than a decade, which now travels interstate and features some of the greatest rieslings and riesling producers globally. The family all travel widely and have worked in vineyards in Europe. The winery and cellar door operate sustainably and since 2009 has been certified organic.
Varieties include riesling, chardonnay, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc and shiraz and due to the cold nights and warm days, have very high natural acidity and display many cool climate characteristics while retaining great power and presence.
