Description
Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour in Western Australia is a popular marina that provides anchorage for fishing vessels and offers mooring areas and wharf space for boats up to 60 meters long.
It also offers services like refuelling facilities and support services for the local fishing industry.
The harbour was constructed in 1919 with a 300-meter breakwater to provide anchorage for fishing vessels. A fish market was included in the South Jetty but was removed in 1929. In 1962, a southern breakwater was built, and a land reclamation project in the same year created space for fishing companies and service industries. The harbour housed up to 120 fishing boats between 1969 and 1972, and a boat lifting facility was constructed in 1982.
Today, the Fremantle Fishing Boat Harbour is surrounded by a tourism precinct and is near numerous restaurants and a brewery called Little Creatures. Visitors can enjoy views of marine life, watch the catch being brought in or boats being repaired, and have a wide variety of food options.
Many of the fishing enterprises at Fremantle have roots in the Italian towns of Molfetta and Capo d'Orlando. Each year, the Blessing of the Fleet ceremony takes place in the harbour, featuring a procession of fishermen and their families walking through Fremantle streets to the harbour, carrying two statues.
