Description
The Geraldton Streetwork Aboriginal Corporation is an award winning Youth organisation and is recognised as one of the most efficient and proactive youth programs in the Mid West Region of Western Australia.
Amongst many other programs GSAC exists to reduce the incident of Juvenile crime by providing counselling and programmes for the social development of youth by providing clients with emotional support and promoting desirable skills and values.
GSAC is governed by an all volunteer Board of Directors.
GSAC operates on two sites- the town based youth centre in Eastward Road, and Gunnado
Farm 5 klms east of Walkaway. GSAC owns Gunnado freehold and has done so since 1993.
In 1987, in response to a community need to address the perceived problem of numbers of
youth, perceived to be mainly of Aboriginal descent, being on the streets in the CBD area and the potential connections with disturbances and/or street crime, community volunteers would walk the streets to talk with the young people present. Two youth councillors were then funded
by the Federal Department of Employment, Education and Training.
This program has expanded and continues today. Every Thursday five staff will drive out to the CBD to engage with the children, providing food and fun.
