Description
The Golden Quest Discovery Trail is a 6-day, 2,000-kilometre adventure that takes you across Western Australia's Kalgoorlie district, one of the world's largest gold-producing areas.
Along the way, you will explore unembellished legends, frozen-in-time ghost towns, stunning wilderness, and charming outback towns. The trail begins with a captivating drive from Perth to Kalgoorlie where you can shadow the goldfield's original water pipeline from Mundaring Weir to Coolgardie. Coolgardie is where gold first glinted in the desert dust in 1892, and the heritage architecture of Kalgoorlie is striking. In Kalgoorlie-Boulder, you can dig into history at the Western Australian Museum and take a mind-blowing tour of the Super Pit, one of the world's biggest operating open-cut gold mines. Head up Mount Charlotte to see the lights sparkle as dusk envelopes Australia's largest outback town. Continuing along the Golden Quest Discovery Trail will take you to the historic gold-mining town of Menzies, passing through spell-binding towns such as Broad Arrow, Ora Banda, Siberia, Goongarrie, and more. The trail then takes you to the Lake Ballard salt pans, which host the starkly beautiful outdoor art installation Inside Australia, featuring 51 sculptures by British sculptor Antony Gormley. From Menzies, the trail leads you to Niagara Dam and the one-horse town of Kookynie, a hyperactive goldfields hub once home to 1,500 thirsty miners. Leonora's gorgeously well-preserved main street, ghost town Gwalia with its amazing old pub, and the abandoned nickel
