Description
Gordonbrook Dam, located in Gordonbrook, South Burnett Region, Queensland, Australia, is a historical earthen dam built in 1941.
Along with Boondooma Dam, it is the main source of water supply for Kingaroy, serving the Wide Bay-Burnett area. It was initially built to provide water to the Royal Australian Air Force Training Base during World War II. In 1987, due to increased demand, the dam wall was raised. The catchment of 590 square kilometres supplies the dam with water, which can store up to 6,800 megalitres at full supply level. The dam covers an area of 130 hectares.
Gordonbrook Dam is a great spot for outdoor enthusiasts looking to enjoy fishing, boating, or swimming. Visitors need to be mindful of the high levels of blue-green algae, especially during dry periods, which can pose a risk to people and animals. The boat ramp now has gates to prevent boats from entering during high-risk times for the algae. Visitors engaging in activities are doing so at their own risk.
Gordonbrook Dam experiences high levels of Cyanobacteria during dry seasons, which can lead to blue-green algae blooms. It's important to understand that activities near or in the water can pose a risk, and visitors are encouraged to take every necessary precaution.
Gordonbrook Dam plays an important role in providing Kingaroy's water supply. Under normal circumstances, the town water supply is a 70:30 blend of water from Boondooma and Gordonbrook dams.
