Description
The Grand Canyon Track in Blackheath, located in the Blue Mountains, is a historic loop track that takes you deep into the heart of the World Heritage-listed Grand Canyon.
Since 1907, this intimate and adventurous track has been popular among hikers. With its arresting sandstone walls, ever-present waterfalls, and abundant native plants, it offers an awe-inspiring experience.
The track begins at Evans Lookout and winds through lush native vegetation, including ferns and golden wattles, while staying close to Greaves Creek. This makes it particularly enjoyable during the summer months. You have the option to shorten the loop by leaving a second car at the Evans Lookout Road entrance or make it a day trip by stopping for lunch at the nearby picnic area before returning to the lookout.
Although the track features challenging semi-ledges, no specialist hiking or abseiling equipment is required. Comfortable walking shoes are sufficient for exploring this rewarding hike that showcases the natural beauty of the Blue Mountains. For those with extra energy, the nearby Cliff Top walking track is worth checking out.
For the best hiking conditions, it is recommended to undertake the Grand Canyon Track during the warmer months, particularly between December and February. Winter can make the trail icy and is not recommended for inexperienced hikers.
To reach the Grand Canyon Track, take the M4 motorway from Sydney, which connects to the Great Western Highway. Head west on the Great Western Highway, passing through the towns of Katoomba and Blackheath, until you reach the Grand Canyon Track. The track starts at Evans lookout, located at the end of Evans Lookout Road, Blackheath.
