Description

Griffiths Island is located at the mouth of the Moyne River in Port Fairy, Victoria, Australia.

It is accessible on foot via a causeway and is an important historical site in the region. The island has a rich history dating back to the early 1800s, with evidence of Aboriginal use and later settlement by John Griffiths. It served as a whaling station and a mission for young Aborigines. The Griffiths Island Lighthouse, built in 1859, was a navigational aid for Port Fairy and is now operated by the Victorian Channels Authority. The island has consolidated into a single island and provides shelter for Port Fairy Bay. The Moyne River borders the northern side of the island.
