Harington Point Gun emplacements

Harington Point is a settlement located at the Otago Heads, at the northeastern end of Otago Peninsula, close to the entrance of Otago Harbour, within the boundaries of the city of Dunedin, New Zealand.

The settlement is situated between Taiaroa Head, the site of the only mainland royal albatross colony in the world, and Te Rauone beach, historically known for its many sand dunes which have eroded. It is accessible via a 45-minute drive from Dunedin City on sealed roads, and is also serviced 7 days per week by a regular bus service taking 60 minutes from the city center, as well as a school bus.

Harington Point is home to the Harrington Point Battery, a coastal defense system built in the 1890s amid panic, which remained ready for an enemy that would never come. The battery includes a number of gun emplacements (pill boxes), observation posts, and underground bunkers which would have connecting tunnels. The site also features a Russian scare tunnel system, including magazine, engine room, and living quarters, as well as a World War II searchlight engine room. Visitors to Harington Point can explore the Harrington Point Battery and learn about its history. The site is free to visit and open to the public. The area is also known for its scenic drive from Portabello Road, with many stops along the way. However, visitors should be prepared for windy conditions.

In January 2020, a project was launched to protect the site from erosion, with Te Runanga o Otakou, the Dunedin City Council, and the Department of Conservation joining forces. Overall, Harington Point is a must-visit destination for history buffs and those interested in coastal defense systems. Its location on the Otago Peninsula also offers stunning views and a scenic drive.
