Description
Hattah-Kulkyne National Park is a 48,000-hectare (120,000-acre) natural haven located in the Mallee district of Victoria, Australia.
It is easily accessible from Melbourne and is situated near the Murray River, making it a perfect location for weekend getaways, hiking trips, and school camping trips. The park boasts a rich history and diverse flora and fauna for visitors to explore.
In 1915, a sanctuary was created to conserve the stunning beauty of the Hattah lakes. By 1960, the Hattah Lakes National Park was declared, and in 1980, it was expanded and rebranded to the current Hattah-Kulkyne National Park. Ornithologist Les Chandler and the Reverend Clarrie Lang were instrumental in lobbying for the park's declaration.
The park lies in the Mallee district, known for its red dirt and mallee eucalyptus trees. It has abundant water resources, with Lake Hattah being the largest lake in the region. The park is managed in conjunction with other nearby parks to efficiently cater to visitors.
Hattah-Kulkyne National Park is an important bird area, providing habitat for over 200 bird species, including threatened mallee birds like the malleefowl, black-eared miner, and mallee emu-wren. Park management prioritizes the preservation of this vital ecosystem.
With its scenic vistas, diverse flora and fauna, and rich history, Hattah-Kulkyne National Park offers visitors an unforgettable experience. Come and explore Victoria's Mallee district's nature paradise.
