Fremantle’s iconic Dalgety Wool Stores are brought back to life in this exciting multi-residential project.
Dalgety Wool Stores has been a hallmark of Fremantle’s rich culture and history for almost a century. Occupying 9660sqm, the heritage-listed building overlooks Fremantle Port, facing Queen Victoria and Beach streets.
Cameron Chisholm Nicol was appointed by Match Projects to create a concept for adaptive re-use of the wool stores, capitalising on the building’s heritage character and unique spatial qualities.
The historic four-storey structure, with its saw-tooth roof, century-old jarrah beams, exposed brick expanses, grand windows and 3.6m-high ceilings, is undergoing a magnificent restoration to become Heirloom apartments.
Most of the original structure has been retained, with the massive floor beams and timber supports becoming a primary feature of the dwellings.
Two central courtyards are configured to provide fresh air and daylight to the 183 one- and two-bedroom warehouse-style apartments. Sleek modern kitchens and bathrooms incorporate high-quality finishes, including Corian benchtops and Laminam Italian ceramic splashbacks.
The juxtaposition of old and new gives these stylish apartments a unique, urban edge that is unlike anything else seen in the Perth metropolitan region.
Currently under construction by Built, Heirloom is a catalyst for the revitalisation of Fremantle’s west end.
